Summary

Why the vision of bernardino ramazzini was expanded in milan at the turn of
the xix century?

In order to answer this question it is necessary to mention the activity of Luigi
Devoto, who after two centuries from the publication of the De Morbis artificum

Diatriba, whose principles sank into oblivion , founded in Milan the Clinica del
Lavoro, the first Institut of Occupatinal Medicine in the world, dedicated to the
study, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of the occupational diseases. He also
organized the first International Congress of Occupational Medicine whose gaim
was to honour the numerous workers who died or were gravely injured boring
the Simplon Tunnel. In that occasion, Devoto contributed to the foundation
of the first Association of Occupational Medicine, which today is called Interna-
tional Commission on Occupational Health, whith the aim of protecting workers
health and promoting the adijustment of work to the capacity and state of

health of workers. At the turn of the XIX century in Milan industries, handicrafts
and commerce were higly enlarged with the accomulation of great riches by
the proprietorship and impoverement of the working classes. To oppose this
situation numerous umanitarian initiactivities arised with the purpose of safe-
guarding the workers wellbeing. In meantime movements of protest occurred
causig strikes violently suppressed by the governamental auctorities. The Pope
