Thank you for your kind invitation to the Collegium Ramazzini to join you today
for this significant event. Thank you also for your tolerance of my limited Italian.

First, a few words about us. The Collegium is an international scientific aca-
demy of physicians and scientists from more than 40 countries based in the
Castello di Bentivoglio, very close to us.

We are named in honor of Bernardino Ramazzini, the father of Occupational
             Medicine.

The organization was founded by Professor Cesare Maltoni, Director of the
Ramazzini Institute in Bentivoglio, and Dr. Irving Selikoff, of the Mt. Sinai School
of Medicine in New York in 1982.

The mission of the Collegium is to increase scientific knowledge of the occu-
pational and environmental causes of disease and to transmit this knowledge to
policy makers, in order to protect public health.

For our Fellows, Ramazzini’s teachings are still potent today, even among the
so-called “moderns”. Bernardino Ramazzini is our role model and the inspira-
             tion for our professional life.

He teaches us to act as a bridge between the halls of science where knowle-
dge is discovered and the wider world that can benefit from this learning.

As a Collegium we embrace one of Ramazzini’s most famous teachings, in
agreement that “prevention is better than cure (of a disease)”.

Once again, thank you for the kind invitation to be with you today.
